what it’s really like to be out on submission as a debut author

plus what does "out on sub" actually mean?

In this week’s Love, Writing, I’m pulling back the curtain on one of the most nerve-wracking parts of the publishing process: being out on submission. In a special 20-minute video just for paid subscribers, I’m sharing what it’s been like to be in this in-between space—what my agent is doing behind the scenes, the kinds of questions she’s asking me, and what I’m doing (or trying to do) in the meantime while editors read my manuscript.

Spoiler: it’s gonna be a little stressful. Like, “refreshing my inbox for the 10th time before 10 a.m.” stressful.

I’ll also talk about:

  • What going on submission actually looks like

  • Why it’s such an emotional rollercoaster for authors

  • How I’m dealing with the uncertainty

  • And how I’m trying to stay grounded (and creative) through it all

If you’ve ever wondered what happens after you sign with an agent—or if you’re in this stage yourself—I hope this behind-the-scenes look feels honest, supportive, and a little less lonely.
